Bush calls on Congress to approve war funding

March 162010

Hello! I’m Kristin Volk on this Friday, the 30 of November 2007 with a UPI Headline Update.

President Bush is urging Congress to approve billions of dollars in war funding before Christmas. He said that if Congress doesn’t clear the funds, the Army would have to shut down bases and start laying off more than 100 thousand civilian workers by mid-February. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has already ordered the Army and Marine Corps to plan for cutbacks. A spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the speaker has no plans to revisit war funding before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Congress is close to raising fuel economy standards for most U.S. cars and trucks. The bill would increase the corporate average fuel economy standard to 35 miles per hour fleet-wide by 2020. Right now, the standard for cars is 27 and a half miles per gallon and just more than 22 for trucks. However, the legislation also has several significant loopholes that would allow auto companies to get around the new limits.
The Senate passed the mandate in June, and the House is expected to vote next week.

Pakistan’s Pervez Musharraf says his country’s state of emergency will be lifted and the constitution restored in less than three weeks. That’s before the general election is held January 8. Musharraf made the announcement yesterday, after being sworn in to presidential office as a civilian for another five-year term. The move was welcomed by main opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, who intends to take part in the general elections under protest. But former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said his party would boycott and demanded the reinstatement of judges done away with by Musharraf.

Public health officials are calling for tighter restrictions on salt content in food. They argue that cutting back on its overuse could save thousands of lives each year. The Center for Science in the Public Interest wants the Food and Drug Administration to beef up labeling, require manufacturers to cut salt in packaged foods, and subject it to stricter regulations. The FDA hasn’t considered this issue since 1982 but says it’s the right time to revisit it.

That’s all for now. Check out our weekly wrap-up from the White House today on upi.com. For all of us at UPI, have a nice weekend!

Fox News : Swine Flu Outbreak UPDATE!

March 142010

BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8016909.stm

Dozens of people have died and hundreds of others have been infected in a viral outbreak in Mexico suspected to have been caused by a strain of swine flu.

The World Health Organization thinks the virus may be behind 60 deaths in Mexico since mid-March.

Mexican authorities have closed schools in affected areas and a vaccination campaign is being launched.

Seven non-fatal cases of a new form of swine flu have also been confirmed in the southern United States.

A WHO spokesman said 12 out of 18 samples taken from the Mexican victims showed they died from a virus with the same genetic structure as the one found in the US.

The WHO would convene an emergency meeting in the “very near future” to determine whether the event constituted a “public health event of international concern”, Gregory Hartl told Reuters news agency.

The White House said it was following the US outbreak – in California and Texas – closely.

‘Mutated from pigs’

WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said “unusual end-of-season influenza activity” was noticed in Mexico starting from the end of March.

Fifty-seven people had died in Mexico City from flu-like symptoms, she said, and another three in San Luis Potosi in central Mexico. There are around 800 suspected cases, she said.

Strange Swine Flu Found In California

December 232009

(CNN) — A total of seven cases of a previously undetected strain of swine flu have been confirmed in humans in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. None of the patients has had direct contact with pigs.
Swine flu is usually diagnosed only in pigs or people in regular contact with them.

Swine flu is usually diagnosed only in pigs or people in regular contact with them.

Five of the cases have been found in California, and two have been found in Texas, near San Antonio, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s Interim Deputy Director for Science and Public Health Program.

The CDC reported Tuesday that two children in the San Diego, California, area, infected with a virus called swine influenza A H1N1, whose combination of genes has not been seen in flu viruses in either human or pigs before.

The patients range from age 9 to 54, Schuchat said. They include two 16-year-old boys who attend the same Texas school, and a father and daughter in California.

“The good news is that all seven of these patients have recovered,” Schuchat said.

The first two cases were picked up through a special influenza monitoring program, with stations in San Diego and El Paso, Texas. The program aims to get a better sense of what strains exist and to detect new strains before they become widespread, the CDC said. Other cases emerged through routine and expanded surveillance.

At this point, the ability for the human influenza vaccine to protect against this new swine flu strain is unknown, and studies are ongoing, she said.

There is no danger from contracting the virus from eating pork products, Schuchat said.

The new virus has genes from North American swine and avian influenza, human influenza and swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe, said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC’s Influenza Division.
Don’t Miss * CDC: Swine flu seen in 2 California children

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza, according to the CDC. It does not normally inflect humans, but cases have occurred among people, especially those who have had direct exposure to pigs. There have also been cases in the past of one person spreading swine flu to other people, the CDC said.

In 1988, in an apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had contact with the patient, the CDC said.

Person-to-person transmission is believed to occur in a manner similar to the spread of the influenza virus: through infected people coughing and sneezing, the CDC said. People may contract swine flu by touching something with viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

From December 2005 to February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine flu were documented.

Symptoms of swine flu in humans are expected to resemble regular human seasonal influenza symptoms, including fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, and coughing, the CDC said. Other reported symptoms include runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The new strain of swine flu has been resistant to the antiviral drugs amantadine and rimantadine, but has responded to the other licensed options: oseltamivir and zanamivir.

The CDC is working closely with health officials in California and Texas to learn more about the virus. The agency expects to find more cases, Schuchat said.

If swine flu can mutate to spread between humans, what does this mean for avian flu? Because of the virus subtype, it is less likely that avian flu would become transmissible from person to person, but still possible, said Dr. William Short at the division of infectious diseases at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The news is not cause for widespread panic, but people at risk — those who live in or have traveled to the areas where patients live, or have been in contact with pigs — should watch out for symptoms and get tested if they occur, Short said.

Texas Republican slams Bush “demented philosophy of conquest

December 152009

Full story at http://www.thebluestate.com/2007/02/video_texas_rep.html

Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) stood his ground and joined the twenty-or-so other Republicans that have decided to vote with the House Democrats in favor of a non-binding Iraq resolution that condemns President Bush’s troop surge.

Speaking of Bush, Congressman Paul was very straight-forward in his displeasure for Bush’s “demented philosophy of conquest.” Here is a portion of his floor speech:

RON PAUL: “In recent decades, our policies have been driven by neoconservative empire radicalism; profiteering in the military industrial complex; misplaced do-good internationalism; mercantilistic notions regarding the need to control natural resources; and blind loyalty to various governments in the Middle East.”

You can add Ron Paul’s name to the small list of the few level-headed Republicans left in Congress.
