Is It Just Corporate Free Speech?

April 222010

In a ruling sometimes characterized as protecting “corporate free speech,” the US Supreme Court held this month that “the Government may not suppress political speech on the basis of the speaker’s corporate identity” in the case of Citizens United vs the Federal Elections Commission and my support for the free speech rights involved found me in some strange company while this landmark legal decision caused some other people to change their minds or to consider changing their policies, as I show in this video.

Copenhagen; Global Climate Change Scam For Global Taxes

April 102010

http://RevolutionNews.us — December 2009 — Deliberately timed to coincide with the start of the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen, the Environmental Protection Agency on Monday declared that carbon dioxide, a naturally occurring gas thats essential to life on Earth, poses a threat to human health and welfare. This determination clears the way for the federal government to begin restricting energy production and restructuring the entire American economy.

The EPA cited a 2007 Supreme Court ruling declaring that carbon dioxide is a pollutant, subject to regulation under the Clean Air Act, but the science upon which that ruling was based has now been called into question when emails and internal documents between the UNs leading climate change scientists were leaked to the public. Contained with in the files was evidence of suppression, manipulation and destruction of climate data. The emails revealed that the entire historical climate record that is the basis for all determinations of climate change is based on inaccurate data and has been manipulated to match a political and economic agenda.

If the EPA acts unilaterally to restrict carbon dioxide emissions, the impact on the economy could be even worse than a cap and trade law enacted by Congress. The reasons for this move by the Obama Administrations EPA appear to be two-fold: First, to establish authority for President Obama to make enforceable agreements at the UNs climate conference even in lieu of a treaty or Congressional approval; and Second to give the administration leverage to coerce the Senate into enacting a cap and trade law just to lessen the economic damage that could be wrought by the EPAs heavy-handed restrictions of CO2.

At this moment, our national economy is under threat by carbon regulation schemes on three fronts: The Copenhagen conference designed to create a world carbon regulatory authority which could undermine our sovereignty; The cap and trade bill thats been passed by the House of Representatives and now awaits Senate approval; and the Obama Administrations decision that it can regulate carbon dioxide via the EPA even without approval by Congress.

For a preview of what this could mean to American families, one can look to Germany, where due to restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions, electricity costs three-times more than in the US and gasoline is now $8.00 per gallon.

You must make your voice heard loud and clear right now. This is no longer a far-away possibility. Its happening as you read this. Times up.

Take Action: If you dont think its a good idea to dramatically slash domestic energy production at a cost of trillions of dollars and untold American jobs over the politics of a discredited climate scare, pick up your phone and call the White House right now. Tell the Obama Administration you wont stand for this unparalleled fleecing of the American public. Call (202) 456-1111 to be heard today.

On the Road to Health Reform, Congress Moves a Step Closer

March 162010

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com

A major reform of the American system of health care and insurance has moved farther in Congress than ever before. President Obama wants a final bill passed by the end of the year. But a difficult road still lies ahead.

On November seventh, the House of Representatives passed a bill with an estimated trillion-dollar price over ten years. The president called the vote historic. President Obama said the Affordable Health Care for America Act will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance. It will provide quality affordable options for those who dont. And it will bring down the cost of health care for families, business and the government while strengthening the financial health of Medicare.

But thirty-nine Democrats voted no, and only one Republican, Joseph Cao of Louisiana, voted yes. The bill passed with just two more votes than required. Republicans say the plan would add to the nation’s debt, raise insurance costs and expand government involvement in health care.

Republican Representative Joe Barton from Texas said: “So, there is a choice. Bigger government, more mandates, more control, less freedom. Or lower costs, more opportunity, more freedom or more choice. I vote for more freedom.”

The bill aims to provide health coverage to thirty-six million Americans. That would raise the nation’s coverage rate to about ninety-six percent.

The most disputed part of the bill is a “public option” for individuals and small businesses. The government would compete with private plans by offering its own insurance — based on payment rates negotiated with providers.

The House bill would raise taxes on high earners to help pay for the plan. It would also cut four hundred billion dollars from health programs for the retired and poor — money that supporters of the bill say is now being wasted.

Most Americans would have to buy insurance or pay a fine; the government would help the needy. All but the smallest businesses would have to offer insurance for their workers or pay a tax. Some small businesses could receive tax credits to help with their costs. Insurance companies could not deny or cancel coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. And the industry would lose its protection from anti-competitive laws.

And that’s the VOA Special English Economics Report. You can read more about the health care debate at voaspecialenglish.com.

Fox News : Swine Flu Outbreak UPDATE!

March 142010

BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8016909.stm

Dozens of people have died and hundreds of others have been infected in a viral outbreak in Mexico suspected to have been caused by a strain of swine flu.

The World Health Organization thinks the virus may be behind 60 deaths in Mexico since mid-March.

Mexican authorities have closed schools in affected areas and a vaccination campaign is being launched.

Seven non-fatal cases of a new form of swine flu have also been confirmed in the southern United States.

A WHO spokesman said 12 out of 18 samples taken from the Mexican victims showed they died from a virus with the same genetic structure as the one found in the US.

The WHO would convene an emergency meeting in the “very near future” to determine whether the event constituted a “public health event of international concern”, Gregory Hartl told Reuters news agency.

The White House said it was following the US outbreak – in California and Texas – closely.

‘Mutated from pigs’

WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said “unusual end-of-season influenza activity” was noticed in Mexico starting from the end of March.

Fifty-seven people had died in Mexico City from flu-like symptoms, she said, and another three in San Luis Potosi in central Mexico. There are around 800 suspected cases, she said.

Congress Works to Block EPA Carbon Rules

January 222010

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5BH05M20091218?type=politicsNews
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican lawmakers said on Thursday they would try to block a Environmental Protection Agency proposal that opens the door to federal regulation of planet-warming gases.

Barack Obama | Green Business

Last week, the EPA issued a ruling that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health, clearing the way for the agency to regulate carbon without congressional legislation.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is leading an effort in the chamber to overturn the finding through a rarely used joint resolution of disapproval.

Getting the proposal passed will be a heavy lift, since Republicans are a minority in both the House and Senate. The resolution requires the approval of both chambers and President Barack Obama.

Some Democrats have also expressed concerns about the EPA regulating carbon.

Advancing climate policy through regulation “is not the best tool,” Murkowski told reporters on Thursday at a briefing held by Energy Daily. “In fact, most would say it is the worst tool we could be using.”

Murkowski and other critics of the EPA’s finding say it would cause substantial damage to the economy by burdening businesses with additional costs.

Murkowski’s resolution has picked up support from other Republicans in the Senate and a similar effort is being taken up by Republicans in the House.

“We’re not going to allow the executive branch, through the Environmental Protection Agency … to appropriate to themselves the power to make laws that govern the people of the United States without the United States Congress acting in this area as well,” Republican Senator Jon Kyl said at the briefing.

Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer, head of the Senate Environment and Public Works committee, decried the plan to block the endangerment finding.

Aaron Copland – Long Time Ago

January 152010

Old American Songs, for voice & piano

Piano: Aaron Copland
Baritone: William Warfield

Photo: “Nan de Gallant, Eastport, Maine” by Lewis W. Hine, 1911
Library of Congress (Public Domain)

The text included in the video was written by Hine himself quite probably.
Beginning in 1907, Hine worked as a photographer for the “National Child Labor Committee”, a committee lobbying against child labour.
He was also a freelance photographer for “The Survey”, a leading social reform magazine.
For several decades he contributed, as a photographer, to denounce the perilous working conditions of men, women and children in modern industry.

This photo has been haunting me since I first saw it. The description made by Hine of Nan and her family’s life is something very troubling.
Yet it is Hine’s final statement (“Nan is already a spoiled child”) what I consider the most troubling.
Whatever he meant with that horrendous euphemism (“spoiled”) the word sounds like an irrevocable sentence…Spoiled, something that can not be mended, that has no cure, ruined for ever…
I hope this child was able to beat the odds

This video is a small homage to Nan de Gallant

Long time ago (ballad)

“On the lake where droop’d the willow
Long time ago,
Where the rock threw back the billow
Brighter than snow.
Dwelt a maid beloved and cherish’d
By high and low,
But with autumn leaf she perished
Long time ago.
Rock and tree and flowing water
Long time ago,
Bird and bee and blossom taught her
Love’s spell to know.
While to my fond words she listen’d
Murmuring low,
Tenderly her blue eyes glisten’d
Long time ago”.
