Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is the junior United States Senator from California and a member of the Democratic Party. Boxer was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, becoming the second female Jewish U.S. senator, after Sen. Dianne Feinstein. She was reelected in 1998 and in 2004 for a term ending in January 2011.

With the convening of the 110th Congress, Boxer became the first female chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee and, following the resignation of Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota) from the post, she was also chosen as chair of the Select Committee on Ethics. This made her the only senator to preside over two committees simultaneously. She holds the record for the most popular votes in a statewide contested election in California, having received 6,955,728 votes in her 2004 re-election over former Republican Secretary of State Bill Jones.

She currently holds the position of Chief Deputy Whip of the Democratic Majority.

On August 17 at the Republican convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, George H. W. Bush called on Quayle to be his running mate in the 1988 United States presidential election. The choice immediately became controversial. Press coverage of the convention was dominated with questions about “the three Quayle problems”, in the phrase of H. Brent Bozell, executive director of the Media Research Center, a conservative group that monitors television coverage. The questions involved his military service, a golf trip to Florida with Paula Parkinson, and whether he had enough experience to be President. Quayle seemed at times rattled and at other times uncertain or evasive as he tried to handle the questions. Delegates to the convention generally blamed television and newspapers for the focus on Quayle’s problems, but Bush’s staff said they thought Quayle had mishandled the questions about his military record, leaving questions dangling. Although Republicans were trailing by up to 15 points in public opinion polls taken before the convention, they received a significant boost that put them in the lead, which they did not relinquish for the rest of the campaign.

One lonely old police car has set on fire and the media and police state will now sensationalize. Let the tear gas stage commence!! Now the police will have good reason to turn up those sound ‘cannons’. To protect and serve; the interest of the ruling elite.
Toronto police agreed to amend their guidelines for use of the cannon, keeping volumes below the maximum and not using the device from close distances.

The portable loudspeakers are also known as sonic guns because the volume, specifically on the “alert” function that emits an ear-piercing beeping sound, can be turned up so high they can be used as weapons.

“I have concluded that a very real likelihood exists that demonstrators may suffer damage to their hearing from the proposed use of the Alert function at certain distances and volumes,” Ontario Superior Court Justice David Brown wrote in his ruling.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Labour Congress had sought an injunction curbing police use of the cannon, and their lawyer, Paul Cavalluzzo, said Toronto police “went overboard.”
-
Police forces in charge of security at the G20 summit in Toronto have been granted special powers for the duration of the summit.

The new powers took effect Monday and apply along the border of the G20 security fence that encircles a portion of the downtown core. This area — the so-called red zone — includes the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where delegates will meet. The new regulations effectively expand the jurisdiction of the existing Public Works Act to apply to high-security areas of the summit site.

Under the new regulations, anyone who comes within five metres of the security area is obliged to give police their name and state the purpose of their visit on request. Anyone who fails to provide identification or explain why they are near the security zone can be searched and arrested.

A short video documenting the first of two plaque unveilings that took place on September 30, 2006 at Beauport Armoury and Val Cartier both near Quebec City, Canada.

The plaques are commemorating two of the 24 WWI internment camps across Canada that held of 8000 Eastern Europeans, 5000 of whom were Ukrainian. The Ukrainians were targeted because the area that they came from was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, with which Canada and its allies were at war. The Canadian government took advantage of the situation and used the internees as cheap labour to do public works. This was Canada’s first internment operation and application of the War Measures act. It continued from 1914-1920, some internees being held even after the war ended. This episode of Canadian history is little known. Inky Mark, MP, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and many other volunteers across Canada worked for years to have the government recognize this injustice. Inky Mark introduced Bill C-331 (Ukrainian Canadian Restitution Act) and was accepted in 2005. (see links http://www.infoukes.com/history/internment/bill_c-331/)

The following people are seen in the video: Dr. LUBOMYR LUCIUK (Director of Research, Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association), KIM PAWLIW reading poem (Grand-daughter of internee), ANNE SADELAIN unveiling plaque (Daughter of internee), Priests from the Ukrainian Catholic REV. OLEH KORETSKY and Ukrainian Orthodox REV. Dr. IHOR KUTASH churches bless the plaque, and NANCY LYZANIWSKI presents remarks.

The American people have had it with business as usual in Congress. They are fed up with practices such as tucking special-interest provisions into bills behind closed doors, secretly changing bills without a vote, and passing bills no one has read. This has happened for far too long, but never before has the need for reform been more apparent than in the past year under Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her Democratic majority.

Americans are demanding change in the way Congress works. Recognizing this, I and other reform-minded congressional Republicans this week will put forth a new transparency initiative a series of common-sense congressional reforms aimed at bringing some much-needed openness and accountability to the House.

In just 10 months, with help from the Obama White House, Speaker Pelosis Congress has taken business-as-usual to a devastating new extreme. The American people have watched Congress rush through a massive stimulus spending bill no one read; a massive $410 billion omnibus spending bill loaded with thousands of un-scrutinized earmarks; and a new cap and trade national energy tax loaded with special-interest giveaways unveiled at 3:00 am on the morning before a vote.

Now the White House is pushing for a final year-end bill which will be written in secret by the majority behind closed doors to replace the current health care system with government-run care, and transform about one-sixth of our nations economy. The bill will be hammered out in a private, partisan House-Senate conference committee with no public access or scrutiny, in direct contradiction of President Obamas pledge that such talks would be televised on C-SPAN.

These are the actions of a Democratic majority that has forgotten its the American people who are really in charge. These are actions designed to shut the American people out while politicians go about the business of limiting their freedom. And in an era of 10.2 percent unemployment, mounting debt, seemingly endless bailouts, and rapidly expanding government, these abuses are the last straw for the American people, whove clearly had enough.

Republicans have had enough, too. The House GOP congressional transparency initiative includes common-sense changes such as read the bill reform that would require all bills to be posted online for a minimum of 72 hours before they are brought to a vote. We also believe:
•Members committee votes should be posted online within 48 hours so the American people can see how their representatives voted.
•Committees should be required to post the text of adopted bills online within 24 hours of adoption to end the practice of phantom amendments being added to bills secretly after they pass at the committee level.
•Major negotiations on sweeping bills that would dramatically expand the reach of the federal government such as the current government takeover of health care should be open to the public and subject to a full and honest debate when bills reach the floor.
•Cameras should be allowed in the secretive House Rules Committee, the panel that decides which bills and amendments come to a vote.
Our transparency initiative calls for immediate implementation of all of these reforms. Were calling on Speaker Pelosi to bring all of them to an immediate vote. If she wont do it, a Republican majority will. You can read more about the House GOP congressional transparency initiative online, at http://gopleader.gov/readthebill.

Did Republicans miss an opportunity to enact common-sense changes like these when we were in the majority? Yes — and we wont make the mistake again. With this initiative, were taking some common-sense steps to renew the drive for an open and accountable Congress. We recognize restoring the bonds of trust between the American people and their elected leaders starts with changing Congress itself. We hope Speaker Pelosi will join us, and allow these common-sense reforms to go forward.
